5/23: sprayed feeding mixture from recipies.
5/21: planted onions between along the east side.
5/18: planted a second variety of basil.
5/14: planted chard. transplanted bell peppers.
4/30: planted some wildflowers, spinach, squash, zucchini, habaneros, cilantro, catnip
4/23: planted nasturtiums, borage, carrots, cucumbers, marigolds. difficulty increases...
4/22: fully a week late, i marked and planted the tomatoes, most basil, cantelope and zinnias. the complicated plan makes planting difficult but doable so far.
4/12: planted carrots, beets, lettuce in the new auxilliary strip south of the garlic. 2002 seeds so they might not work well. moved the compost pile. started covering the eyesore rotting railroad tie area with compost and soil from under the compost. the plan will be to cover that to form a raised bed for salad vegetables then put the un-rotted compost in the borrow pit to level it off. watered everything.
4/3: raked over the main bed. pulled tons of weeds and grass from there and from the zinnia strip. peeled out two strips of sod in front of the prom backdrop / filled with peat and planted already-sprouted peas, alternating snow and sugar snap. spread a microthin layer of peat over the wildflower bed. watered potates and peas.
4/2: tilled the garden and zinnia strip in front of the patio with mom&dad's nice new roto-tiller. picked one tulip for mom.
3/30: i was gone for 4 days and the resulting dryspell took heavy casualties in the basement. the stuff upstairs did well but there will be a serendipitous few weeks between plantings of the stuff downstairs. a few of the onions will have to be re-started / all of the peppers / most of the habaneros / one of the tomatoes
3/20: set up peat pellets with basil, mint, rosemary, catnip seeds in the kitchen window
3/18: set snow peas and sugar snap peas in damp paper towels to germinate. they will grow great onto the prom backdrop.
3/15: planted 20 more peat-pellet onions. turned the compost. planted three potatoes in each of four tires. 3.8 cubic feet of compressed sphagnum peat moss seemed to be just the right amount for four tires.
3/08: General shuffling of the indoor seedlings. A few replantings and transplantings. The onions appear to have failed to mature because of a fungus. I will grow another set without the reynolds wrap lid this time to keep them a little drier.
3/03: Tulip sprouts have appeared.
2/26: removed 2 sprouted tomato seedlings from the greenhouse effect. thought about it for a minute. planted five of the ten zinnias. these will be an early blooming group and i will plant the remaining five outside for a later blooming group.
2/20: planted appropriate seedlings for 8 weeks before the average last frost date. 4 tomatoes, 4 habaneros, 5 peppers, 21 onions.
2/8: removed 2
seedlings from the greenhouse effect.
2/4: burpee seeds arrived. decided to use april 15th as the last frost date.
two indoor plantings will occur at 2/18 and 3/18 (eight weeks and four weeks
before the average last frost)
2/2: made this webpage.
2/1: looked out over the land from the balcony. saw that it was good. took hefty spade-swipes at the compost heap and trimmed back the neighbor's tree that always be tryinna shade it and make things difficult. set up a grow light for 18 hours per day in the basement. planted one catnip, one basil and one marigold in peat pots.
January: Measured the beds. Thought about how to design the garden without rows according to height and friendly relationships between plants and past crops, etc. Ordered seeds from Burpee. Basically finalized the roster.
