    Solar Panel

    A recent hobby has been to build and install a solar panel on our roof. It’s comprised of 36 common Evergreen Solar 3″x6″ 1.8W cells in a simple wooden frame with a sheet of acrylic to protect them. My Dad helped run conduit and wires last weekend and the open source hardware/software available these days makes it unbelievably easy to setup a voltage logging apparatus. A 10k then a 2.2k resistor straddle the wires coming into our basement from the panel. The junction of those is connected to an analog input on an Arduino Mini. Every minute, the Atmega reports the value read at that input to the serial port. A simple processing sketch receives the value and makes an HTTP request to my web host, which stores the value in a database. The “Flot” plugin for jQuery makes rendering a nice line-graph of the incoming data straightforward.

    Prototyping Station

    I should have built this 20 years ago. Slanty enclosure is from Gateway Electronics. Switching 5 & +/-12v power supply for now and plenty of space for switches/indicators and I-O recepticles. The voltmeter sitting on top is from ABC Electronics and will be installed with a 0-30v LM317 based variable power supply.

    Oil Spill Solutions Brainstorm

    1. Spaghetti Block Stick a long thin rod into the well and anchor the top end. Repeat until the flow is impeded.
    2. Chill Kill Wrap copper tubing around the pipe and pump through a refrigerant cold enough to freeze the oil.
    3. Coldmember Combine 1 & 2: stick a long, skinny U-tube into the well and pump refrigerant through it.
    4. Righty Tighty Build a giant, fillable ballast cylinder with tangentially and upward firing rockets on the sides and a large tapered screw point on the bottom. Lower it from a ship. Move it over the well with robots. Engage the rockets to spin it and push it downward.
    5. Kerjunk Drill radial holes in the pipe wall and push rods through until there is somewhat of a grill inside. Drill one more hole below the makeshift grill and pump in golf balls.
    6. Concrete angioplasty
    7. Lancelot Build a very long tapered hollow cone. Lower from a ship and aim into the well with robots. Pump in concrete, sinking the plug into the well.

    Cats Only

    The door between basement ping pong room and basement laundry/toilet room needed to allow for cats’ access to the litter box. Lauren had the perfect idea: we would make a cat-shaped hole that would allow cats but no dog through. Mitch Loidolt kindly drew for us a feline outline.

    Lamb Cake 2010

    We followed the standard 16-oz “Pound Cake” instructions this year and things came out well. This time I smeared shortening into every nook and cranny and then heated the mold for 20 minutes at 375. Then I let it cool completely and poured in the batter. I tried to pile more batter into the head part but the the nose still came out partially empty.

    Louisa is some kind of lamb cake mold extraction genius. There was barely anything left in the mold and the delicate ears didn’t need toothpicks at all. (I still put in toothpicks so I wouldn’t break them in the frosting process.)

    Lauren whipped up a super-stabilized whip cream frosting that again had the gumption to reconstruct a lamby nose.

    The lamb cake would probably be okay to eat but it always has a way of sticking around. After we abandoned it fully intact at our second easter-day party, the hostess felt guilty enough to snap a photo before they dumped it.

    I’ve been having a hard time trying to train a Self-Organizing Map to categorize a large pool of short documents by my selected keywords. The initial results were promising but I couldn’t adjust the training parameters well enough to train the error sufficiently low that I would be confident of the categorizations, even after several days of training.

    Some nice folks on comp.ai.neural-nets suggested a few other techniques and I’ve implemented simple routines to perform K-Means Clustering. The categorization of my 3300 documents by 323 keywords now takes less than 10 seconds.

    ASCII Cutting Board

    Lauren gave me a classic 10″ radial arm saw for my birthday after we moved (and have a garage). I’ve been testing its ability to cut accurately. Ripping this walnut and maple to one inch felt reasonably dangerous and I’ll probably build the jig suggested in the original manual for ripping small stock.

    I decided the next cutting boards will be end-grain, so the rest of the letters for this one should be glued from single squares. This produces a less-accurate row but got the job done.

    I let the last glue setup cure for 72 hours.

    oiled

    Sanded flat, edged on the router table, wetted to raise the grain and sanded to a smooth finish. Then, mineral oil. Extra points if you can tell me what word is encoded.
